This is Madhol

Located in the western part of South Sudan, the extremely rural village of Madhol is nestled within the Jur River region and consists of roughly 300 households.

The economic activities that people are practicing in Madhol include farming both livestock and local crops, fishing and bee keeping. However, despite these practices, they still face many challenges that have created intense hardship within their community.

The only health facility is around five kilometers north of the village which is not well equipped and rarely has medications for common illnesses such as malaria, typhoid fever, and diarrhea which regularly plague the families that call this region home. Because of this, the members of Madhol Village have had to resort to more traditional cures which are much less effective in treating illness. In the case of severe sickness, they must walk, bike (or in extreme cases rent a motorbike) to travel the 20 kilometers necessary to a larger healthcare facility.

In addition to healthcare concerns, this community doesn’t have a properly functioning school. Most children who are school age must unfortunately stay at home until they are old enough to travel on their own to attend school further away. Those seeking secondary education must go even further away—trekking 20 kilometers to reach the institution.

Despite these significant challenges, there have been no humanitarian relief efforts for at least the last three years.
