Somalia

World Concern has worked in Somalia since the 1980s, implementing programs among refugees, Internally Displaced Persons, and poor communities. Since the Civil War, we have targeted food security and income, emergency drought assistance, disaster risk reduction, famine relief, and WASH projects to improve the lives of Somali communities and strengthen resilience among the most vulnerable. We are currently active in three areas. Our years of experience in Somalia have helped build trust and acceptance within the communities, bringing hope for sustainable change.

Community Issues

  • Almost half of Somalia’s population are facing acute food insecurity with an increasing number expected to experience famine. Millions of people suffer from severe malnutrition.
  • One million Somalis have been internally displaced because of lack of food and water.
  • The compounding drought in the Horn of Africa has failed to bring the necessary rains for households and has had a devasting effect on agriculture.
  • Uprisings continue to spread as people fight for limited resources to survive.
  • The increasing threat of terrorist groups threatens the safety and security of Somali livelihoods.

Focus Areas

  • Disaster Response & Risk Reduction

    Provision of emergency food and water, and shelter kits including blankets, cooking utensils, hygiene kits and emergency shelter materials is given so each household receives the necessary support to meet their immediate needs.

  • Health & Nutrition

    Deworming medication is provided to children in communities where clean water is scarce and there is a high risk of this parasite. Trainings are provided to prevent health risks. Community health volunteers work with mothers and train them on nutrition education for themselves and their children to improve nutritional status and prevent malnutrition.

  • Clean Water

    Emergency water is trucked in to provide people with water, and training is given on preserving it during drought conditions. WCS teams works to install water tanks and ensure sustainable water management practices for the community's behalf.

Annual Results

World Concern Somalia served 76,865 men, women, and children through our programs last year.

Nutripackets Provide Nutrition to Those in Need!

Asha's distress is a common sentiment amongst Somalis in the current climate. When her daughter died, leaving two children extremely malnourished, without water, and without hope, she and her grandchildren left their home in search of help. Fortunately, they were enrolled in a World Concern program funded by USAID that provides nutritional supplements to mothers and children, and trains thousands of caretakers on proper health and nutrition practices.

The results have been remarkable—at 9 months of age, Asha’s grandson Jamal weighed 16.3 pounds and his MUAC (the circumference of his upper arm which is used to determine malnutrition) was 4.45 inches. Now, after months of supplements, he weighs 26 pounds, and his arm circumference is 5.27 inches, which is in the normal range for his age.

Asha has benefitted from this intervention from World Concern and USAID as they have provided relief to her family.
