This is Ab Lela

Deep in the landlocked country of Chad’s southern tropical savannah region is the village of Ab Lela, home to 204 families who live in extreme poverty. The village consists of 95% Muslim families and some Christians who enjoy good relations with each other, despite their different religions.

Families here feed and support themselves by growing small crops, raising animals, and occasionally fishing. Farming is challenging, as the region is prone to both frequent drought and seasonal flooding, as well as pests that destroy crops. There is no local market for farmers to sell their produce.

Health issues and sickness plague children and families here, who suffer from malaria and frequent water-borne illnesses. Very few children in the village attend school, and sadly, child marriage is common, with girls as young as 12 being married off to much older men.

The families of Ab Lela village are ready for change. With your support, they will experience lasting transformation and a bright future for themselves and the next generation.

Hawa’s Story

A widow’s struggle

Life has not been easy for 67-year-old widow and mother of two, Hawa Abunassik. She has endured suffering and challenges throughout most of her life. She and other families in the village are plagued with health concerns, lack of food, education, and generations of poverty.

“I encounter a lot of difficulties in finding food and taking care of myself. With the poor rainfall in recent years which does not promote good harvests, life has become very difficult,” she laments.

When Hawa or one of her family members are sick, they have to travel long distances to seek medical care. With no school in the village and no teachers, children grow up without an education. Her great hope is that her village can unite and work together to overcome these challenges.

“I pray that our partnership with World Concern helps us change our lives, and may God help World Concern to help our children,” she said. Hawa’s prayer is a powerful one, and an important first step towards physical and spiritual transformation in her life, family, and community.
