Khassim

Chad

This is Khassim

Deep in the landlocked country of Chad’s southern tropical savannah region is the village of Khassim, home to 180 families who live in extreme poverty. The village consists of both Muslim and Christian families who enjoy good relations with each other, despite their different religions.

Families here feed and support themselves by growing small crops, raising animals, and occasionally fishing. Farming is challenging, as the region is prone to both frequent drought and seasonal flooding, as well as pests that destroy crops. There is no local market for farmers to sell their produce.

Health issues and sickness plague children and families here, who suffer from malaria and frequent water-borne illnesses.

The families of Khassim village are ready for change. With your support, they will experience lasting transformation and a bright future for themselves and the next generation.

Iliyas’s Story

A father’s struggle

Sixty-four-year-old Iliyas Abdelil has lived in the village of Khassim his entire life, and he has endured suffering and challenges throughout most of his life. Despite working hard as a farmer and fisherman to support and care for his family, including seven children, the area has not had good rainfall in recent years, his harvests have been limited and his family has struggled. His and other families in the village are plagued with health concerns, lack of food, education, and generations of poverty.

When he or one of his family members are sick, they have to try to find transportation and travel long distances to seek medical care. With no school in the village and no teachers, children grow up without an education.

His great hope is that his village can unite and work together to overcome these challenges. “Considering these difficulties, I call on all members of the community of Khassim to be united and engaged in this partnership that binds us with World Concern to come out of our suffering,” he declared.

Iliyas is on the right track. Engaging the community is the first step towards change. Join Khassim village in their journey of transformation.
