Far beyond the end of the road in Northern Kenya is the village of Mpagas, a community of about 1,950 residents. The land is communally owned and is generally hilly because it is at the foot of the Matthews range. The people are primarily nomadic pastoralists, keeping cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and donkeys. Women contribute by selling milk, beadwork, and rearing chickens independently from men. Additionally, beekeeping and the sale of honey provide supplementary income. Despite varied income sources, the community struggles with challenges such as livestock diseases and inadequate market access.
Male elders are the key decision makers, with the young men, known as Morans, protecting the community from wild animals and hostile intruders. About 64% of the people are members of a Christian church, but only 9% have a Bible and many people don’t attend services because there are no churches nearby and not enough teachers.
Most of the people have enough to eat except for certain times of the year, with only 14% at risk for malnutrition. The most pressing health issues are high incidences of diarrhea and dysentery, especially during rainy seasons because they don’t have latrines and drink contaminated water. The health of women who are pregnant and lactating is also a concern.
