Nkopon

Kenya

This is Nkopon

Nkopon Village is located in a remote region of Kenya near the border of Tanzania. Most households here practice small scale farming and raise livestock to keep food on the table. Families live in traditional homes called “manyattas”, created from mud, sticks and grass.

Though the families here raise animals, they would like to grow vegetables. However, there simply isn’t enough rain to properly grow crops, and not enough infrastructure to create irrigation systems. Those who are able to grow a small crop yield kale, cabbage, and tomatoes.

Most members of Nkopon Village find themselves without enough money for food throughout the year. Families often cut down the size of their meals or skip out on important parts of their diet. Because of this, many people are lacking proper nutrition.

Families here must rely on unclean water sources like ponds to drink from, which causes high levels of water-borne disease. Because of extreme drought conditions, these sources are often unreliable, and some people must even go entire days without water to drink.
