Myanmar

Region: Asia

World Concern has worked in Myanmar since 1995. We support communities and people by helping them identify and leverage their physical assets, skills, and social networks to improve their situation, advocate for their rights, and make use of innovations and best practices. We currently work mainly with Internally Displaced Persons to meet their immediate needs through the provision of food, water, and shelter. Our approach is integrated and responds to conflict and environmental emergencies.

Community Issues

  • Ongoing and evolving conflict affects the health, safety, and security of people.
  • Entire communities are being displaced, as the risks of injury, trafficking, and armed-conflict recruitment put youth’s lives in jeopardy.
  • More than 12 million children are not currently getting an education.
  • Monsoons and flooding are resulting in crop loss and food insecurity.
  • Currently, people in fourteen out of the fifteen regions of the nation are in danger of acute malnutrition.
  • More than 14 million people need aid in some form.

Focus Areas

  • Six-to-nine-month programs are implemented to provide food, non-food items, and shelter assistance to internally displaced persons. Mine risk education teaches people to identify and avoid mines, and how to respond if someone is affected by one.

  • Mother support groups facilitate screenings for malnutrition and provide supplements for women and children. Families are given chickens and other livestock to provide nourishment. Essential medicines are given to health clinics and treatment provided to internally displaced persons to combat communicable diseases.

  • Awareness sessions are decreasing incidents of gender-based violence and promoting child protection.

  • Dignity kits are distributed to adolescent girls. Training in personal hygiene and communal sanitation practices is attended by all ages. Communities are supported in building latrines.

Annual Results

A Story from Myanmar

Giving Food and Hope to the Displaced

Much of our work in Myanmar is providing for the displaced people who live in refugee camps. The people running these camps are often Christians and their kindness breaks through all barriers, showing the love of Christ in remarkable ways to a people who are living in extremely treacherous conditions. A 55-year-old man shared this experience with our staff:

My friend and I were working as day laborers far from home, but because of escalating conflicts there were no more job opportunities. We decided to return home because we could not stay, but our journey was stopped far from our village. Restrictions prevented us from entering a village to find food, so we sought refuge in a Christian church. The journey there took three days, and we went over mountains and through forests without any access to food. When we finally made it, the Christian church provided food that we desperately needed.

Overwhelmed with gratitude, I found myself shedding tears of sadness for the hardship endured and tears of joy upon finally being able to eat. This experience marked the first time I ate and cried simultaneously. My heartfelt thanks go out to all the compassionate individuals who supported us during this challenging period. (The person responsible at the camp echoes gratitude to those who funded the project for providing food and offering comfort in the face of hardship.)
