Haiti

Region: North America

World Concern has served in Haiti since 1976, partnering with communities to facilitate agricultural development, economic empowerment, food security, disaster risk reduction, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and non-clinical health. Currently, we have programming in 203 communities in the southern peninsula, with staff, volunteers, and partners in Sud-Est and across Sud, Grand Anse, and Nippes, the three areas most impacted by the earthquake.

Community Issues

  • With over 80% of the capital of Haiti controlled by gangs, the country’s infrastructure is crumbling. Because of the gangs, Haitians live in fear for their family’s safety and of losing their sources of income.
  • Without adequate infrastructure, water-borne diseases such as cholera are increasing.
  • Recurring earthquakes, floods, droughts, and hurricanes are exacerbating food scarcity.

Focus Areas

  • Food Security & Livelihoods

Training sessions provide farmers with better agricultural practices and seeds for increased crop yield. Goats are distributed to provide milk for families and through offspring to provide income.

  • Disaster Response & Risk Reduction

With deforestation and other climate changes, World Concern promotes soil health through training and distributing seeds for climate-smart agriculture. Community members develop and implement Community Disaster Risk Reduction plans to build their resilience against environmental and man-made disasters. World Concern provides resources for vulnerable families to diversify their livelihoods.

  • Spiritual Transformation

Trainings are held for church and community leaders to promote good communication, conflict resolution, and mutual respect. Churches are equipped to reinforce and commit to the mandate to act as reconcilers of people to God and are supported with audio Bibles and studies to give to their congregations.

  • Economic Empowerment

Savings and Loan groups are trained in business development and financial management. Goats have been distributed, providing a source of income through milk and offspring.

Annual Results

World Concern Haiti served 2,976 men, women, and children through our programs last year.

A Story from Haiti

The Gift of a Goat Inspires Generosity

Marvens is a young boy of 14 years old in the third year of primary school. There are six in his family and his father is a farmer. His parents make a lot of sacrifices so he and his siblings can attend school, and they are all behind in their grade levels because of sporadic attendance due to finances. Marvens will finally complete his classical studies at about 24.

Thanks to the Hope to Kids project, a glimmer of hope opened up for Marvens and his parents. World Concern met him, and he was chosen according to the criteria of vulnerability, to receive a goat. And added blessing, the goat was pregnant and has given birth to two lambs.

“I am very happy because my family did not have the possibility of giving me a goat, and I love breeding,” Marvens said. “Things are really difficult for my family. I am very happy to have been chosen and now I share my joy with another friend from my school called Louivens who is 12 years old. I received this gift free of charge, so I share my joy with him and tell him not to forget to also share with another when God gives him some too. I can only say thank you to World Concern for allowing me to be a donor. God bless you.”
