A Story from DRC
Ayikoru Built a Latrine to Keep Her Family Healthy
Through World Concern’s WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) program more than 85 percent of the homes in Azoo Village now have latrines, showers, and garbage cans. This intervention allows project participants to live in healthier conditions and reduces the risk of diseases, such as cholera, that are transmitted through uncovered fecal matter. Ayikoru’s family is one of these.
Ayikoru, a housewife and mother of three, did not have a latrine and often had to rely on her neighbors' facilities or go to the bathroom outside. Then, through training with World Concern staff, Ayikoru became aware of the importance of sanitation and decided to act by building her own latrine.
With the help and guidance of the WASH facilitators, Ayikoru built a latrine for her family. She dug a hole that was almost 20 feet deep! This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to Ayikoru's determination and commitment to improving conditions for herself and her family. Now they are much healthier.
Because of Ayikoru’s example, many people in Azoo have built latrines and open defecation has significantly decreased.
