Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

Region: Africa

World Concern has served the marginalized and isolated in DRC since 2018. We work with community members who are starting and running small businesses. Working with the Aru Diocese, we bring the Gospel and disciple believers, enabling them to sustain changes in their communities, live at peace with each other, and reach out to others with the love of Christ.

Community Issues

  • An estimated 19.6 million people in DRC are in need of humanitarian assistance.
  • The Congolese population in DRC is faced with low national income, limited access to health and education, and the total disintegration of economic and transportation infrastructure resulting in considerable regional disparities in poverty.
  • It is significantly challenging to reach the most vulnerable populations. Only half of the 9.8 million children and 1.6 million pregnant women in need are currently being helped.

Focus Areas

  • Education

Extensive training is given to equip teachers at all levels of education to raise the level of basic education and the schooling of children and reduce illiteracy among adults.

  • Economic Empowerment

Through Savings and Loan groups and vocational training in sewing and other skills, women and youth are empowered to open their own businesses and improve their living conditions. This promotes respect and a voice for them in making decisions in the community.

  • Protection

Teaching in the church has focused on responsibilities in marriage and parenthood, leading to more peaceful relationships and a decrease in gender-based violence. By participating in demonstrations for International Women’s Day, women in the communities we serve are advocating for peace amidst the conflict.

  • Clean Water

Committees are being formed in villages to train the people about maintaining clean water, sanitation, and hygiene practices that will lead to better health and promote human dignity. Latrines are commonly used now to maintain a clean environment that is free of diseases.

Annual Results

World Concern DRC served 44,093 men, women, and children through our programs in last year.

A Story from DRC

Ayikoru Built a Latrine to Keep Her Family Healthy

Through World Concern’s WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) program more than 85 percent of the homes in Azoo Village now have latrines, showers, and garbage cans. This intervention allows project participants to live in healthier conditions and reduces the risk of diseases, such as cholera, that are transmitted through uncovered fecal matter. Ayikoru’s family is one of these.

Ayikoru, a housewife and mother of three, did not have a latrine and often had to rely on her neighbors' facilities or go to the bathroom outside. Then, through training with World Concern staff, Ayikoru became aware of the importance of sanitation and decided to act by building her own latrine.

With the help and guidance of the WASH facilitators, Ayikoru built a latrine for her family. She dug a hole that was almost 20 feet deep! This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to Ayikoru's determination and commitment to improving conditions for herself and her family. Now they are much healthier.

Because of Ayikoru’s example, many people in Azoo have built latrines and open defecation has significantly decreased.
