Chad

Region: Africa

Since 2007, World Concern Chad (WCC) has served refugees and Internally Displaced Persons, as well as host communities in Chad by helping them attain economic stability, productive agriculture, education, clean water and sanitation, food and nutrition, community health, and church engagement. We are currently active in three regions of Chad.

Community Issues

  • Close to 6 million people in Chad do not have enough food and 2.1 million have reached the severe phase of food insecurity.
  • Malnutrition, measles, malaria, and meningitis deeply affect the health and well-being of people in Chad.
  • Chad hosts more than 1 million Sudanese refugees.
  • Many people in Chad are displaced because of severe flooding and loss of agricultural resources.

Focus Areas

  • Health & Nutrition

Activities in our Chad programs for community health involve improving access to health care and reducing the risk of diseases and infections, particularly for children and mothers.

  • Economic Empowerment

Women are trained in Savings & Loan groups and can generate income for their families and establish multiple sources of income through private businesses.

  • Food Security & Livelihoods

Farmers, fishermen, and livestock owners are supported with equipment and training to increase food production, enabling them to feed their families and earn income. Training in home gardening improves day-to-day nutrition, particularly for pregnant women, as well as children under the age of five.

  • Clean Water

The communities are supported with tools to keep their environment clean and the community health committee visits homes regularly to train families in hand washing, maintaining clean water, and proper sanitation including the use of latrines to prevent illness and promote dignity.

Annual Results

World Concern Chad served 4,001 men, women, and children through our programs last year.

A Story from Chad

Water for School Children

Kelou is eight years old and a student at Khassim school. World Concern recently partnered with her school community to install a clean water source, which has made a significant difference for all the children in the village.

A clean water source at school provides children with water during extreme heat, prevents disruption of the school day when students must return home to quench their thirst, and allows them to learn WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) skills and teach those to their parents, siblings, and caretakers.

“I am very happy because of the water we received in our school playground," Kelou said. “My friends and I are very happy. Because of school, I want to become a doctor when I grow up to help my brothers, sisters, and parents.”
