A Story from South Sudan
From Hopeless to Economically Empowered
Deborah and her children lived in punishing poverty because her husband is unable to make enough money to support his extensive family. She took on odd jobs like charcoal burning, growing vegetables to sell, and selling tea at a local market, but having money for household items and medication for her children was nearly impossible.
Then World Concern started savings groups in Aluelweng Village, and Deborah joined four of them. With her little income, she saved in all of them for two years, until she had enough money to buy two oxen and an ox plough. She uses these to plough her farm and grow more vegetables, and she hires out her ox plough to other farmers for $10 a day. The income Deborah makes now is plenty to buy food and pay for the needs of her family. She has become empowered through these efforts and is very happy.
“Through World Concern OVT Project, my problems are solved. My husband is also benefiting from my efforts!” Deborah said.
