South Sudan

Region: Africa

World Concern began working in South Sudan in 2004, providing both emergency and long-term support. We currently operate across five states: Western Bhar el Ghazal, Warrap, Northern Bhar el Ghazal, Western Equatorial, and Central Equatorial.

Community Issues

  • The protracted crisis in South Sudan continues to drive humanitarian need across the country and high rates of Internally Displaced Persons continue to surge.
  • Nearly 8 million people are threatened with severe malnutrition, and famine stands as a persistent threat to the health and wellbeing of the population.
  • Ongoing violence, resource conflicts, and risks of gender-based violence contribute to the people’s fears of lack of safety and chronic poverty.

Focus Areas

  • Food Security & Livelihoods

Farmers are supported with training and seed loans to grow diverse crops with greater yield, and beekeepers are trained and supported with modern hives. Women are growing household gardens to give their families better nutrition. Mothers are trained in preventing malnutrition for themselves and their children. Mothers and children at risk of or experiencing malnutrition are provided with nutritional supplements to improve their nutritional status.

  • Education

Project teams work to increase access to education and extra-curricular activities for children and adults in community managed schools. WCSS supplies schools with education and extra-curricular materials to under-resourced community schools to aid in better learning and academic engagement.

  • Spiritual Transformation

Evangelists are being trained and reaching nearby villages with the Gospel and many people are coming to Christ in the communities where we work. The churches are active in sharing the Gospel, teaching the Bible, baptizing new believers, prayer and fasting, and community service.

  • Economic Empowerment

Savings and Loan groups are actively saving and using their money to open new businesses and generate income to improve the lives of their families.

Annual Results

World Concern South Sudan served 831,528 men, women, and children through our programs last year.

A Story from South Sudan

From Hopeless to Economically Empowered

Deborah and her children lived in punishing poverty because her husband is unable to make enough money to support his extensive family. She took on odd jobs like charcoal burning, growing vegetables to sell, and selling tea at a local market, but having money for household items and medication for her children was nearly impossible.

Then World Concern started savings groups in Aluelweng Village, and Deborah joined four of them. With her little income, she saved in all of them for two years, until she had enough money to buy two oxen and an ox plough. She uses these to plough her farm and grow more vegetables, and she hires out her ox plough to other farmers for $10 a day. The income Deborah makes now is plenty to buy food and pay for the needs of her family. She has become empowered through these efforts and is very happy.

“Through World Concern OVT Project, my problems are solved. My husband is also benefiting from my efforts!” Deborah said.
