A Story from Kenya
A Savings Group Helped Nterena Become an Entrepreneur
Nterena is a hardworking mother of five who lives in Lolkuniani Village in Northern Kenya. With a low family income, she and her husband found it hard to feed their children and to send them to school. But then she joined a Savings & Loan group through World Concern and opportunities for her began to open.
Along with six of the women in her group, Nterena started her own retail business by taking a loan from the group. She operates her business in a nearby town on Thursdays and her husband often helps transport her commodities to sell. Initially, her investment in the business was $50, but now it is worth $150.
Thanks to Nterena’s hard work and the support given through the saving group program, her household income has gone up from $2 to $5 per week and she can now afford to buy more food for her family and school supplies for her children.
“We appreciate being supported with this program. Whenever my business goes down, I run to my saving group and borrow some funds to boost my business stock, in times of drought, the saving group has been a key source of loan services. Many businesses have closed, but we still have some hope, and we thank God,” Nterena said.
