Focus Areas

  • Health & Nutrition

Children under age five and women who are pregnant and lactating are screened for malnutrition and given supplements to improve their health and weight. Ongoing provision of deworming medication and vaccines are improving the health of children. Care groups are being trained in kitchen gardening to make vegetables accessible and given cooking demonstrations to encourage dietary diversification and the importance of a well-balanced diet.

  • Spiritual Transformation

Church members are trained in evangelism for adults and children, and they are going door to door in their communities to share the Gospel.

  • Economic Empowerment

Savings and Loan groups enable women to save money and take out loans to start their own businesses and learn financial management. Vocational training and support with equipment is enabling youth to work in their communities.

  • Clean Water

Training in disease-prevention is leading to an increase in hand washing, personal hygiene, and the use of household waste pits to improve sanitation.

A Story from Kenya

A Savings Group Helped Nterena Become an Entrepreneur

Nterena is a hardworking mother of five who lives in Lolkuniani Village in Northern Kenya. With a low family income, she and her husband found it hard to feed their children and to send them to school. But then she joined a Savings & Loan group through World Concern and opportunities for her began to open.

Along with six of the women in her group, Nterena started her own retail business by taking a loan from the group. She operates her business in a nearby town on Thursdays and her husband often helps transport her commodities to sell. Initially, her investment in the business was $50, but now it is worth $150.

Thanks to Nterena’s hard work and the support given through the saving group program, her household income has gone up from $2 to $5 per week and she can now afford to buy more food for her family and school supplies for her children.

“We appreciate being supported with this program. Whenever my business goes down, I run to my saving group and borrow some funds to boost my business stock, in times of drought, the saving group has been a key source of loan services. Many businesses have closed, but we still have some hope, and we thank God,” Nterena said.
